Viz Media already owns the American rights to Shonen Jump, the biggest manga anthology in Japan. & now, they will also own the American rights to their biggest rival- Shonen Sunday. Viz already releases a number of Shonen Sunday titles, & have been since the very beginning (Ranma 1/2 was a Shonen Sunday series). But now that they actually have the rights to use it for a new label, Viz will be starting a Shonen Sunday imprint, with Rumiko Takahashi's Rin-ne being the first series falling under the lineup. Viz has been simulcasting the new series since it premiered in Japan, & when the first collected volume hits American stores (about the same time it hits Japanese stores as well), it'll be under the new label.
Other Shonen Sunday titles that Viz is currently putting out are going to be under this imprint as well, including InuYasha, Kekkaishi, Case Closed, Hayate the Combat Butler, & Yakitate Japan. Viz also noted that any anime adaptations of Shonen Sunday titles that they're releasing will also be under a Shonen Sunday video label series. Of all the titles listed, only InuYasha is being released by Viz on DVD, & they already finished that series. Could a Kekkaishi or Yakitate anime license be around the corner? The website will officially open during Comic Con later this month, where at the same time Viz is expected to announce even more titles for their new Shonen Sunday line.
It's possible that Viz may be planning to make shonensunday.com their second online manga magazine, following the announcement of their online Ikki Magazine, though I doubt it. Even cooler still is if Viz makes a new physical magazine out of this, something to compete with their own Shonen Jump magazine. Again though, I doubt this, but it'd be cool nonetheless. I'd certainly subscribed.
