A Look Back at ACen 2012

Anime Central 2012 took place just two short weeks after C2E2. Barely enough time to calm down after the excitement, and yet the truly big anime convention of the Midwest was about to start up! ACen 2012 was a big one, and here's what went down:

C2E2 2012: Cosplay

We're back to take a look at some of the wonderful cosplay seen at C2E2 last year. The true standout for me was this cosplayer of Gokai Blue from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger! For something that was only seen in Japan, it was pretty cool to see him at an American con- & not one that even specializes in Japanese culture, at that! That being said, there were still other cool anime inspired costumes as well, along with a few other standouts. Check them out:

A Look Back at C2E2 2012

Spring has finally arrived, & with it a new convention season is underway. Here in Chicago, the big two for anime fans are C2E2 & Anime Central, & the 2013 conventions for both are drawing near. As such, I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at the events from last year, starting with C2E2!

Crunchyroll App for Game Boy

Crunchyroll announced today that, in addition to their already well-established iOS & Android apps, they're launching a brand new mobile app. This one is for the Nintendo Game Boy! The new app will allow you to watch full episodes of anime from Crunchyroll, such as Naruto Shippuden & Bleach, on the original Game Boy in all its 8-bit monochrome glory! Who hasn't dreamed of watching simulcasted shows like this?

To get the app, you can get it from Crunchyroll at conventions or find a friend who has the app already. All you need is your Game Boy link cable to transfer the files. I'm sure you all still have yours lying around in an easy to find spot.

One of the many things that Japan is famous for is their dating sim games. Problem is, they often cost a pretty penny. Especially if they're from a major publisher like Key (Clannad, Little Busters, Rewind). But luckily, there's a very interesting one that you can download completely for free- "Hatoful Boyfriend," where all the characters are pigeons! Yes, you heard right. Pigeons.

The game takes place at St. PigeoNation's Institute, where you can enroll in classes & get to know your classmates & teachers. There's the childhood friend, the transfer student, the athlete, the infirmary doctor, & so on. You play as the only human in the school, & you're on the lookout for a potential lover. Which bird is right for you?

This game is 100% REAL & is totally free. Check out the official site, where you can download the game for PC or Mac:

Upcoming Pokemon Games

There are a number of new Pokemon games in the works that we've known about for awhile, but today Nintendo revealed a few more related to the popular franchise. The biggest of which is a port of Pokemon Black & White for the original Game Boy. A trailer for it can even be seen above. Finally, Pokemon Black & White as it was meant to be seen- in black & white. Here's a list of the new games to come out:

New Giant Gundam Statue in Japan

It was big news two years back when Japan was putting up a life-size statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam, the original Gundam from the first anime series. But now Japan is thinking where to go from there? Then it hit them. The original Gundam was okay, but you know what's even better? Gundam Seed! Now there's a series that puts the original Gundam series to shame!

So it made perfect sense that the next statue should be the Blitz Gundam from "Seed." They even included Blitz's stellar cloaking technology for full on authenticity. The new statue currently stands tall at Odaiba Shiokaze Park, as pictured above. Of course you can't see it because of the cloak, but trust us. It's there.

Michael Bay's Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged

LittleKuriboh has sold out! Well, when gigantic Hollywood director Michael Bay (Transformers, Bad Boys) offers you a lot of money to buy out your franchise, it's hard not to say yes. & that's just what happened, as Bay now owns the rights to Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged & is remaking the series in the way he wants it to be. First change- casting Shia LaBeouf as Yugi. An obvious choice, of course. Next change? EXPLOSIONS!! Lots & lots of explosions, because Michael Bay loves them big fireballs. Plus change the dialogue to make the characters sound cooler, add in an "urban" character, hot chicks, & simplify the plot so that there practically isn't one, & you're all set! Another Bay masterpiece! This truly is an improvement for the Abridged Community. Turkey Legs would be proud.

As for LK, don't worry, he'll still be working on some stuff. Like his Marik Plays series, where he plays the game "Bloodlines" as Marik. In fact the latest episode was just added today, & it answers some of the biggest questions we've had about Marik:

Spring Anime Season Changes!

As everyone knows, April is the beginning of a new anime season in Japan. But just as they did last year (twice, actually), the schedule of new shows that were to begin has completely changed at the last minute! But there's tons of good stuff to look forward to with the new lineup, including a surprisingly high amount of sequels that we haven't heard about until just now. These include the long anticipated final season of Full Metal Panic, which will finally see the end of the novels in anime form. There's also a new season of Gantz for the first time in forever. Plus new seasons of Oreimo, Ryuusei no Rockman, Okami-san, Sekirei, Vampire Knight, Claymore, & others!

On the OVA front, there's tons to look forward to as well. Namely a brand new OVA for DragonBall Kai, featuring a brand new original story never seen before in anime or manga! & most important of all, the latest volume of the Yu-Gi-Oh GX manga will contain an exclusive DVD featuring a brand new GX OVA! This story will actually be an adaptation of the GX manga storyline. As the manga has a different story from the anime, it wont be connected to the GX television series, but should still be pretty cool nonetheless. Oh, did we mention that it's gonna be animated by Kyoto Animation (Haruhi, Lucky Star, K-ON, Nichijou)? Because it is! Joy!

DragonBall Z: Abridged 27

Episode 27: The Saiyan Formerly Known As Prince

Here was the conundrum that fell upon TeamFourStar & LittleKuriboh- how do you make Freeza funny, while still keeping him menacing & evil? Oh sure, it's easy to depict Freeza as a flaming transgendered homosexual, but taking that easy route, there's no way to show Freeza's insidious side. At the same time, this is a comedy spoof, so they can't make him too diabolical. & for this episode, they truly needed to balance those two sides of him. A seemingly impossible task, but both in the writing & voice acting, they succeed in aces.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged 54

Episode 54 - They Saved Tristan's Brain

It's been awhile since I've posted an episode of Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged. Luckily, it's been awhile since LittleKuriboh actually did an episode! Almost 7 months, actually. But at long last, it's the final duel of the Big Five TeamFourStar Team4Kids!

Winter Wonder Festival 2012

Back once again, it's Japan's Winter Wonder Festival! It's the place to be to see prototypes of upcoming or potential figurines! Many of these will eventually go on sale to the public, though some are only for display purposes & may never foot into a store. Some are really cool looking, others are very erotic looking. Some are just plain weird. There's cute girls & macho looking men. Something for everyone indeed.

K-ON Otaku Invade London

Well I think we all saw this coming. After the debut of the K-ON movie at the end of last year, it was only a matter of time until Japanese otaku would want to go to London, where the film takes place, in order to visit the places where Yui-tachi run around to. One fan chronicled his adventure with pictures:
